Free Lesson 1: Hand Mirror
Nit Wits #5 ("Mirror Image") was my first attempt at mirroring an image from a looking glass point of view. It wasn't just a simple matter of flipping my artwork — I had to draw a front and back version of a mirror and then position it correctly, perspectively speaking. Oh, and then there was the matter of the "human length" mirror narrowing towards the bottom that made getting the 'bleeding off' reflective viewpoint correct. Drawing a hand-held mirror (that's not looking at itself) is a simple task. Try drawing your own mirror by following my step-by-step drawing lesson #1.

Free Lesson 11: Pumpkin
Nit Wits #23 ("Pumpkasso") was my simple rendering of the popular orange gourd known as the pumpkin. When you look at objects in nature in their most basic forms, it's easy to capture their essence without adding too much detail. In the case of a pumpkin, you have your circular body, a stem, and the vertical lines that give it character.

Of course, you can challenge yourself further by creating a face on your pumpkin ala Halloween-style. But remember, these days a simple Jack-O-Lantern carving is child's play. Draw your own pumpkin by following my step-by-step drawing lesson #11.

Drawing Tip: Improvise with your own version of a circle: pumpkins are distinct by their imperfections and varied round-shapes (tall and narrow, short and squat) and sizes.

Free Lesson 13: Chicken Hen
Nit Wits #34 ("Chicken Eggo") was a lesson to me NOT to be too chicken with using free-flowing contour lines. While it's tempting to use rigid squares, circles, and triangles when first learning how to draw cartoony things, an artist gains more freedom and confidence going with their own flow intuitively drawing free flowy lines.

Chicken Eggo makes contrasty use of rigid shapes, graphic design, typography, and free-flowing contour lines (the chicken), which results in an interesting scheme of events. Try your own hand at drawing free-flowing contour lines by loosely fowlowing my Chicken Drawing Lesson #13.

Do you want to learn how to draw easy and fun cartoony things and develop confidence in your ability to draw other cartoony objects from your imagination? Or are you a teacher or a parent looking for engaging cartooning lessons you can use as classroom activities for your students or for your kids at home? If so my playbook, You Can Draw Cartoony Things! is just right for you!

The lessons in this creative playbook (not workbook!) are taken right from my own cartoony journey that helped me produce my first Nit Wits comics. And my background as a graphic artist with the understanding of the importance of visual, hands-on learning has allowed me to design You Can Draw Cartoony Things! with the beginner in mind. Combine this with my training as a creativity coach, my passion for teaching, and my enthusiasm for encouraging creative exploration, expression, and play in people of all ages, and you’ll know why this playbook makes a super supportive teaching tool for all budding comic artists and dabbly doodlers seeking encouragement and motivation to begin exploring their own cartoony ideas and sense of humor.

Each cartoony lessons features:

  • Printable stand-alone pages that can be printed (and re-printed) multiple times to practice “fresh” and new each time — perfect for classroom handouts.
  • An original Nit Wits comic showing the humor and witty word play context of the cartoony object featured in the drawing lesson.
  • An easy-to-follow step-by-step lesson of a cartoony thing (object or character) with only 3-4 simple steps to complete.
  • Blank drawing space on each lesson page for you or your students to practice your cartoony skills right alongside of mine.

You Can Draw Cartoony Things! will:

  • Teach you (or your students) how to draw simple cartoony characters and objects with 15 easy step-by-step lessons.
  • Engage your imagination and play into your sense of humor with 13 of my Nit Wits comics including Roll Play, Tee Time, Antagonize, and Chicken Eggo.
  • Inspire your creativity and encourage you to create your own cartoony things in your own artistic style.
  • Guide you to other cartooning lessons and free comic art resources on the Web to support your ongoing comic quest.
